Kids, Parents, and Sustainable Habits

Climate Change is real and it is constantly and rapidly happening at such a fast rate that we are all heralding towards an Earth that will soon be unrecognizable. Within the climate change format, we hear the words – natural, eco-friendly, sustainable, etc.

What do these words mean?

Natural means from nature itself. It doesn’t need any other explicit definition.

Eco-friendly means products or practices that are good for nature and do not harm wildlife. This could be disposable plates and spoons/forks that are actually made from natural products like coconut, bamboo or agricultural wastes.

Sustainable has two meanings – one, that is long-lasting and the second that is environmentally conscious. Sustainable could be products or practices. Sustainable practices include habits that help the environment like green energy, zero emissions in products and processing, etc.

How can kids and parents have sustainable habits?

You don’t have to make a huge investment to have sustainable habits. Small changes can have a huge impact if each family adopts these approaches.

  1. Make a list of what you want to buy and what you need to buy. Compare them. Wanting and Needing something are two different things. Helps reduce the unnecessary accumulation of things
  2. Reuse stuff. Tote bags instead of plastic bags. Refill your water bottles instead of buying packaged bottles. These small measures help reduce plastic accumulation and increase the reuse value.
  3. Appreciate nature. Be close to it. Have plants in the home and balconies. Plants help appreciate life and growth. It makes a good science project while you breathe in oxygen too.
  4. Turn off lights and fans when not in use. Yes, electricity isn’t free. We all pay for it. Also, if it keeps getting consumed, it is a waste.
  5. Unplug and turn off laptops and electronic items when not in use. Prevents overheating and they work longer.
  6. Prevent wastage of paper and water and contribute towards reducing carbon footprint. Walk or cycle around as much as you can. It will keep you healthy too!
  7. Recycling initiatives are being taken by public and private bodies in various cities. Start a local chapter if you don’t have one and have a citizen initiative or drive for the same.
  8. Enjoy the world you are living in. Also actively participate in making it cleaner, greener and brighter!

Small things lead to small happiness. As parents, ensure that your child/children can understand the concepts of RRRs and also sustainability. We shall leave a better world for our children if we help them stand up for saving the planet Earth.
